POLL-Japan machinery orders seen down 5.5 pct in March
Reuters: [2008-05-09 10:31:00]
(For a separate poll story on GDP, click on [ID:nT265063])
TOKYO, May 9 (Reuters) - Japan's core machinery orders are
expected to have declined 5.5 percent in March from the previous
month as firms became somewhat cautious about investment due to
slower global growth, a Reuters poll showed on Friday.
The expected drop in the core orders, a highly volatile
figure regarded as a leading gauge of capital spending, would
also be in reaction to a 19.6 percent jump in January, economists
said.
Following are polls for major Japanese indicators scheduled
for the week of May 12-16.

MACHINERY ORDERS
- The government has forecast core orders, which exclude those
for ships and equipment at electric power firms, will show a rise
of 3.5 percent for the January-March quarter from the previous
quarter. Economists say the orders likely achieved the increase.
- Historical figures will be updated when the March data is
released as the government plans to revise its seasonal
adjustment calculation method.

CORPORATE GOODS PRICE INDEX
- Wholesale prices have been supported by rising prices of crude
oil and raw materials.
- Domestic CGPI, which tracks trends of wholesale prices of
goods, is expected to have risen a median 3.6 percent in April
from the same month a year earlier. Forecasts from 34 economists
were for a rise ranging from 3.0 to 4.3 percent.
- Economists said the pace of increase in CGPI probably slowed
in April as gasoline prices fell after a "provisional" gasoline
tax expired on March 31 as opposition parties blocked a
government bill to keep the extra tax in place.
- But the revival of the tax this month has already pushed up
gasoline prices and rises in wholesale prices are expected to
pick up again in May.
CURRENT ACCOUNT
- Japan's current account surplus would probably fell as the
trade surplus shrank in March.
- Customs-cleared trade data showed last month that the trade
surplus fell 30.2 percent in March from a year earlier to 1.119
trillion yen ($10.78 billion). [JPTBAL=ECI]
- The current account surplus was probably 2.82 trillion yen and
down 14.2 percent in March from a year earlier. Forecasts from 29
economists ranged from 2.28 to 3.1 trillion yen or a drop of 5.7
to 30.6 percent percent.
