(Adds details, background)
By Sven Egenter
ZOFINGEN, Switzerland, May 15 (Reuters) - Tensions caused by the global credit crisis are easing in some areas, but it is too early to sound the all-clear, Swiss National Bank board member Thomas Jordan said on Thursday.
In credit markets, the corrections of credit default swaps were pointing to a more positive assessment of market participants, Jordan said.
"There are signs that tensions are easing in certain areas, but it is too early to give a general all clear. There are still certain tensions in the money market," Jordan told journalists on the sidelines of an event in the Swiss town of Zofingen.
"In the money market, the situation is still far from being called normal," he said.
The Swiss central bank has offered funding at low rates in its daily money market operations to get the 3-month Swiss franc LIBOR back to its target rate of 2.75 percent. It has been above the target for weeks due to the tensions caused by the global credit crisis.
The SNB also joined other central banks in offering dollar liquidity to ease the tensions, which were triggered by U.S. households defaulting on home payments, leading to a squeeze in credit markets in Europe and the United States as banks stopped lending for fear of being exposed to the subprime problems.
Asked about the impact of the surprisingly strong growth in the euro zone in the first quarter, Jordan said: "Everything that is positive for growth in Europe is positive for Switzerland, too, given the big importance of the European market for Swiss exports."
The economy of the euro zone grew by 0.7 percent on the quarter in the first three months of 2008 and Germany -- Switzerland's single most important export market -- posted its strongest quarterly growth in 12 years at 1.5 percent.
Jordan declined to comment on the outlook for the Swiss economy or inflation or on the SNB's monetary policy stance.
In a speech, Jordan warned against overregulating the securitisation of mortgages in the wake of the credit crisis.
"Despite the big problems, we should neither end nor over-regulate the securitisation of mortgages," Jordan said at an event of the Swiss Pfandbriefbank.
"The deficiencies of securitisation need to be corrected to restore confidence in the products." (Reporting by Sven Egenter; Editing by Gerrard Raven) ((sven-markus.egenter@reuters.com; +41 58 306 7351; Reuters Messaging: sven-markus.egenter.reuters.com@reuters.net))
