UPDATE 7-Oil hits record $126 on supply worry, fund buying

NEW YORK, May 9 (Reuters) - Oil jumped to a record above $126 a barrel on Friday, extending gains to more than 11 percent since the start of the month on fuel supply concerns and a rush of speculator buying.

U.S. crude <CLc1> settled up $2.27 at $125.96 a barrel before rising to a record $126.25 in late post-settlement trade. London Brent crude <LCOc1> gained $2.56 to settle at $125.40 a barrel, off the earlier high of $125.90.

"It appears that any calculations that included waiting for the next pullback were discarded on the European opening this morning as waves of buying materialized, particularly from speculative interests," said Mike Fitzpatrick, vice president at MF Global.

Oil has surged since slipping as low as $110.53 a barrel on May 1. Investors have seized on disruptions to crude oil supplies in the North Sea and Nigeria, as well as galloping demand for distillate fuels, a category that includes diesel fuel and heating oil.

Strong demand for diesel fuel in Europe, along with the growing use of distillates for generators to supplement strained power grids in fast growing emerging markets, have cut into stocks of distillate fuel and pushed up prices sharply.

"Lingering geopolitical fears and high heating oil prices are helping the market, but the speed of the rise is too fast," said Tatsuo Kageyama, analyst at Kanetsu Asset Management in Tokyo.

The steady rise in crude oil prices once again has turned the spotlight on the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), which for months has insisted it has no control over the factors it blames for pushing up the price of oil, including speculation and the weak U.S. dollar.

An OPEC source said the group might consider boosting output before its next scheduled meeting in September should crude oil prices keep rising. [ID:nL09831021]

But Ecuador's oil minister said there were no plans for an early meeting. [ID:nN09494805]

"If the price keeps going up, OPEC may consult on an increase in production before it meets in September. In my view, any increase would have to be more than 500,000 barrels per day to have an impact on the price," said the OPEC source.

U.S. President George W. Bush said on Thursday he would bring up the subject of oil prices during talks with Saudi leaders during a planned trip to the Middle East from May 8-13.

Bush's trip to the region comes as the Iran-backed Hezbollah group seized the Muslim half of Beirut on Friday from fighters loyal to the U.S. backed governing coalition in the worst spate of violence in Lebanon since the country's 1975-90 civil war. [ID:nL09531435]

Although Lebanon is not an oil producer, civil unrest there has pushed up oil prices in the past, most recently in the summer of 2006 when Israel invaded Lebanon in an unsuccessful attempt to subdue Hezbollah. NYMEX crude ends up, hits record above $126

NEW YORK, May 9 (Reuters) - U.S. crude futures ended higher on Thursday, near an all-time high above $126 a barrel, on fund buying and surging distillate prices on both sides of the Atlantic.

Also supportive, the dollar fell against most currencies, [USD/] causing investors to shift money to oil, traders said.

Heating oil futures charted fresh record highs while gasoline extended its rally to new peaks.

On the New York Mercantile Exchange, June crude <CLM8> settled up $2.27, or 1.84 percent, at $125.96 a barrel, a record, after trading from $124.08 to new intraday high of $126.20. That record was extended in post-settlement trade to $126.25.

Intraday records have been shattered all week and, from the start of the month, prices have risen nearly $16, or 14.5 percent.

In London, June Brent crude <LCOM8> rose $2.56, or 2.08 percent, to a record $125.40 a barrel, trading from $123.30 to $125.90, also a fresh intraday high.

NYMEX June heating oil <HOM8> ended up 12.62 cents, or 3.6 percent, at $3.6360 a gallon, trading from $3.51 to a record $3.6383. In post-settlement trade, the intraday record pushed higher, to $3.6524.

The heating oil crack spread <0#CL-HO=R> ended at $26.75, up sharply from $23.72 on Thursday.

June RBOB <RBM8> finished 6.34 cents, or 2.02 percent, higher at $3.2012 a gallon, trading from $3.1378 to $3.2038, a record high, which went up to $3.2038 in post-settlemenet trade. The RBOB crack spread <0#RB-CL=R> ended up at $8.49, from $8.10 on Thursday.

ICE gas oil futures' premium to Brent crude <LGO-LCO1=R> and gas oil futures <LGOc1> hit record highs on Friday, lifted by concerns about tight world diesel supplies. [ID:nL09834269]

U.S. refined products exports were the highest in more than 17 years last week, driven by rising diesel exports, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said. [ID:nN08403248]

EIA data released Wednesday showed U.S. distillate supplies fell by 100,000 barrels last week and were in the lower half of the normal range for this time of the year.

In the East Coast region, PADD 1, which includes the New York Harbor, supplies were down 22 percent year-on-year.

Demand for distillate in Europe, Latin America and China has provided competition for U.S. fuel.

In U.S. refinery news, Valero Energy Corp <VLO.N> restarted units at its refineries in Port Arthur, Texas, and Quebec, Canada, after turnarounds, a spokesman said. [ID:nN09515983]

The spokesman also said Valero had shut one crude unit and vacuum units for a two-week turnaround at its 340,000 barrels per day refinery in Corpus Christi, Texas. [ID:nSP145763]

NYMEX crude pares gains after record above $126

NEW YORK, May 9 (Reuters) - U.S. crude futures pared gains midday on Friday, after hitting a record high above $126 on fund buying and surging distillate prices on both sides of the Atlantic.

On the New York Mercantile Exchange at 12:40 p.m. EDT (1640 GMT), June crude <CLM8> was up $1.10, or 0.89 percent, at $124.79 a barrel, trading from $124.08 to a record $126.20.

Intraday records have been shattered all week and, from the start of the month, prices have risen nearly $16, or 14 percent.

In London, June Brent crude <LCOM8> rose $2.16, or 1.76 percent, to $125 a barrel, trading from $123.30 to $125.90.

June RBOB <RBM8> was up 3.29 cents, or 1.05 percent, at $3.1707 a gallon, trading from $3.1378 to $3.2011, a record high. The RBOB crack spread <0#RB-CL=R> was higher at $8.38, after finishing at $8.10 on Thursday.
