Key Points

  • Spot bitcoin ETFs lost $144.67M on Aug 10, or 17% of the prior week's $853.54M in inflows.
  • IBIT led redemptions at $53.56M after supplying $694M, or 81%, of the prior week's total.
  • BlackRock cut the in-kind conversion minimum from $25M to $1M, a 96% reduction.

US spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded $144.67 million in net outflows on August 10, ending a five-session inflow streak that had delivered the strongest week of institutional demand since mid-April. The reversal came immediately after a week in which the complex absorbed approximately $853.54 million across all five sessions.

The composition of Monday's redemption is the informative part. BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust led with $53.56 million withdrawn. Grayscale's GBTC lost $52.02 million. Fidelity's FBTC saw $40.32 million in redemptions. Bitwise's BITB shed $28.44 million. Franklin Templeton's EZBC lost $7.38 million. Grayscale's Bitcoin Mini Trust was the only bitcoin product to draw new capital, adding $37.06 million.

IBIT went from being the principal source of new demand to the largest contributor to daily redemptions inside a single session. During the prior week the fund accounted for roughly $694 million of the $853.54 million complex total, or 81%, which demonstrates how heavily the recovery depended on one asset manager.

The scale keeps the reversal in proportion. The $144.67 million withdrawn Monday represents approximately 17% of what entered across the preceding five sessions. Total bitcoin ETF trading value for the session reached $2.03 billion and combined net assets stood at $78.16 billion.

IBIT traded at $36.30, down 1.55% over 24 hours, against a net asset value of $36.19 and a premium of 0.11%. The share price has risen 2.83% over the past month on the NAV measure and sits well above the fresh 52-week low of $32.84 printed when bitcoin approached $58,000 after a hotter-than-expected inflation print.

Bitcoin at $64,279 fell 0.9% over 24 hours, and the ether complex recorded $14.6 million in net outflows on the same session, ending a four-day positive run after roughly $245 million of inflows the prior week.

BlackRock delivered a structural change alongside the flow reversal. The minimum for in-kind conversions of bitcoin into IBIT fell from $25 million to $1 million, a 96% reduction.

$853.54 Million In, $144.67 Million Out, One Session Apart

The sequence across six trading days is the cleanest illustration of how the ETF complex now behaves.

Between August 3 and August 7, US spot bitcoin ETFs attracted roughly $853.54 million with positive flows across all five sessions. That figure represented the strongest weekly print since mid-April 2026 and coincided with bitcoin breaking through the $65,000 psychological barrier.

Monday reversed direction entirely. The $144.67 million outflow interrupted the recovery rather than continuing it, and it happened without any bitcoin-specific news. Brent crude reached $88.89 in a fourth consecutive session of gains, the US 10-year yield approached a seven-month high at 4.726%, and money markets moved from pricing 17 basis points of Federal Reserve tightening by year-end to 22 basis points.

That five-basis-point repricing occurred entirely because of crude, and it produced a $144.67 million redemption in a $78.16 billion asset complex. The transmission mechanism from oil prices to ETF flows now operates within a single session.

The proportion matters for interpretation. Losing 17% of a week's inflows in one day is a pause rather than a rout. It is also the fourth such reversal in three months, which establishes the pattern: the complex accumulates across four or five sessions on constructive macro data and gives back a fifth to a third of it on the first hawkish input.

The five-day inflow streak was characterized as a fundamental shift in how traditional finance views digital assets rather than speculative momentum. Monday's reversal argues the opposite reading: a shift that unwinds on a crude print is positioning rather than allocation.

Combined bitcoin and ether outflows reached approximately $159.2 million for the session, which places the digital asset ETF complex firmly in two-way territory.

IBIT At $36.30 Sits 10.5% Above Its 52-Week Low

The share price structure tells a more constructive story than the flow data.

IBIT traded at $36.30, down 1.55%, against a NAV of $36.19 and a 0.11% premium. That premium is the mechanical confirmation that the arbitrage is functioning: authorized participants create shares when the price exceeds NAV, and an 11-basis-point spread indicates the process is operating efficiently even during a redemption session.

The 52-week low of $32.84 was set when bitcoin approached $58,000 following a hotter-than-expected inflation report. At $36.30, the share price sits 10.5% above that trough. The 52-week high of $71.82 places the current level 49.5% below the peak, which tracks bitcoin's own 49% drawdown from $126,000 almost exactly.

That correlation is the fund's entire function. IBIT follows the CME CF Bitcoin Reference Rate New York Variant, with NAV determined on the basis of the CF Benchmarks Index calculated once daily at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time by aggregating trade flow across several bitcoin platforms during an observation window. Holdings sit in cold storage.

The NAV rising 2.83% over the past month against a 1.55% daily decline captures the recent shape: a monthly recovery interrupted by a session of risk reduction.

The 0.25% expense ratio remains the competitive feature. Against category averages near 0.88% for cryptocurrency ETFs, IBIT charges roughly a quarter of the typical fee, which is the structural reason it has captured the dominant share of flows since the January 5, 2024 launch.

Passive management replicating the underlying index by holding assets in the same proportions means there is no manager decision to evaluate. The fund is a wrapper, and its price is bitcoin minus 25 basis points annually.

For traders, the practical read is that IBIT at $36.30 is bitcoin at $64,279 expressed in a brokerage account, and the levels that matter for one are the levels that matter for the other.

The In-Kind Minimum Fell From $25 Million To $1 Million

The structural change announced alongside the flow reversal is more consequential than the flows themselves.

BlackRock lowered the minimum bitcoin amount required for in-kind conversions into IBIT from $25 million to $1 million, a 96% reduction. The change applies to in-kind creations and redemptions, and investors cannot transact directly with BlackRock since authorized participants continue to act as intermediaries.

The mechanism matters. In-kind conversion allows a holder of bitcoin to exchange coins directly for ETF shares rather than selling into cash and repurchasing exposure through the fund. That removes a taxable disposal, eliminates two rounds of trading costs, and avoids the price slippage of a large sale.

Most bitcoin ETF inflows still arrive as new dollars rather than as bitcoin contributions. Reducing the threshold to $1 million opens the channel to a substantially larger population: holders with $1 million in bitcoin now have access to the conversion process through authorized participants, and activity in the mechanism has grown across the past three quarters.

The strategic implication runs in two directions. Lowering the barrier makes it easier for large bitcoin holders to move assets into brokerage-based ETF accounts while keeping the underlying coins, which converts self-custodied supply into fund-held supply without any purchase occurring in the spot market.

That is a flow figure that does not represent demand. A $500 million in-kind conversion appears as a $500 million inflow while producing zero bitcoin buying, because the coins simply change custodian. As the in-kind channel grows, the relationship between reported ETF flows and spot market pressure weakens.

The reverse also applies. In-kind redemption allows an investor to exit the fund by receiving bitcoin rather than dollars, which produces an outflow figure without any spot selling.

For anyone reading flow data as a proxy for spot demand, the 96% threshold reduction introduces a measurement problem that will grow as adoption increases.

The timing, announced during a redemption session, suggests BlackRock is building infrastructure for the next accumulation phase rather than responding to the current one.

The Complex Holds $78.16 Billion Against $58 Billion Of Inflows

The cumulative arithmetic reveals what the drawdown has cost the institutional cohort.

Combined net assets across US spot bitcoin ETFs stood at $78.16 billion after Monday's session. Cumulative inflows since the January 2024 launch reached approximately $58 billion, with one measure placing the figure at $51.3 billion.

The first eighteen months were a straight climb. Cumulative flows crossed $30 billion by the end of 2024 and $47 billion by mid-2025, driven almost entirely by wealth advisors and traditional allocators finally receiving a familiar wrapper for bitcoin exposure.

The relationship between $58 billion of inflows and $78.16 billion of assets appears favorable until the timing is considered. Capital that entered in 2024 at bitcoin prices between $40,000 and $70,000 has appreciated. Capital that entered in late 2025 near the $126,000 peak has lost roughly half its value.

IBIT's own disclosure quantifies the blended position. The trust held 734,261 bitcoin at a cost basis of $61.0 billion and a fair value of $43.4 billion at June 30, producing an unrealized loss of $17.61 billion, or 28.9% of cost. The implied average acquisition price is roughly $83,080 per coin, which sits 29.2% above Tuesday's $64,279 spot price.

Against roughly $54 billion in assets under management at one measurement point, IBIT accounts for the majority of the $78.16 billion complex. Approximately 80% of ETF-held bitcoin sits with a single custodian at Coinbase, which concentrates operational risk in one venue.

Nearly 7% of all bitcoin now sits inside a Delaware trust structure. That figure is the measure of how completely the ETF wrapper has absorbed supply from the self-custody population.

The consequence for price is that a large cohort of ETF holders sits underwater at an $83,080 average, which creates an overhang between current levels and the mid-$70,000s where breakeven arrives.

2026 Has Been The First Negative Calendar Year

The year-to-date flow record breaks the pattern the first two years established.

Net flows have been negative in 54% of trading sessions during 2026, against 40% in 2025 and 31% in 2024. Year-to-date net flows sit roughly $4.5 billion in the red, which makes 2026 the first negative calendar year in the products' history.

The monthly progression shows the volatility. January and February produced net redemptions. April rebounded hard with $1.97 billion of inflows, the best month of the year, with IBIT alone taking roughly $2 billion in net subscriptions, which means other funds saw net outflows during the complex's strongest month. May and June turned the tape around again.

The longest outflow streak ran thirteen sessions from mid-May through early June, shedding $4.37 billion and coinciding with bitcoin's move to a 21-month low near $59,300.

The precedent for the current episode came earlier. In late February 2025, spot bitcoin ETFs shed roughly $2.61 billion during a single volatile stretch, including a record single-day outflow of $1.14 billion on February 25 as bitcoin fell from $109,000 to below $80,000.

Against that history, Monday's $144.67 million is minor. It is 12.7% of the record single-day outflow and 3.3% of the thirteen-session streak total.

The structural change is what matters. A complex that recorded negative flows in 31% of sessions during its first year and 54% during its third year has transformed from a one-directional accumulation vehicle into a two-way instrument that transmits macro sentiment into spot bitcoin with a one-day lag.

That transformation removes the persistent bid that supported bitcoin through 2024 and 2025. It does not create a persistent offer, since 46% of sessions remain positive, but it eliminates the asymmetry that allowed the asset to absorb selling without price impact.

Sustained net inflows indicate capital choosing ETF exposure while sustained net outflows suggest capital exiting or adjusting risk, and 2026 has delivered more of the second.

Grayscale's Mini Trust Was The Only Product With Inflows

The intra-complex dispersion on Monday identifies where investor preference is shifting.

Grayscale's Bitcoin Mini Trust added $37.06 million while every other bitcoin product recorded redemptions. GBTC, Grayscale's original and higher-fee vehicle, lost $52.02 million in the same session.

That pairing describes a fee migration rather than a directional view. The Mini Trust charges substantially less than GBTC, and investors moving between two funds from the same issuer are optimizing cost rather than adjusting bitcoin exposure. A $52.02 million GBTC outflow against a $37.06 million Mini Trust inflow nets to roughly $15 million of genuine reduction.

Applying that adjustment to the complex total changes the read. Of the $144.67 million headline outflow, approximately $15 million represents Grayscale-family net reduction and the remaining $130 million comes from IBIT, FBTC, BITB, and EZBC.

The concentration in flagship products is the pattern worth noting. Flows on the session were concentrated in several flagship bitcoin and ether funds while smaller and niche products recorded inflows, which is the inverse of the accumulation phase when capital consolidated into the largest and most liquid vehicles.

That inversion is consistent with tactical rather than strategic activity. Investors reducing risk exit the most liquid position first because it costs least to trade. Investors building positions enter the most liquid position first for the same reason. The largest funds therefore lead in both directions.

IBIT's 81% share of the prior week's inflows and its position as the largest single redemption Monday confirms that dynamic operating in both phases within six sessions.

The concentration of capital into the largest provider during the accumulation week reflected investors prioritizing liquidity, brand recognition, and operational scale when allocating through traditional brokerage accounts. Those same characteristics make it the first exit.

Bitcoin At $64,279 Tests $63,900 Below The Flow Data

The spot market structure is what the ETF flows are ultimately about, and it sits at a decision point.

Bitcoin traded at $64,279, down 0.9% over 24 hours, after a session that carried it as low as $63,771 and as high as $64,908. The intraday floor printed at $63,852 during the sharpest leg of the decline. Twenty-four-hour spot turnover reached $21.32 billion against a market capitalization of $1.290 trillion.

The $63,900 to $64,000 zone functions as the operative pivot for three reasons: it marks the 50% retracement of the prior weekly candle, it sits directly above the nearest downside liquidation cluster, and it aligns with the lower boundary of the four-hour consolidation.

Technical levels identified as relevant include the $68,000 resistance zone and the $58,000 to $60,000 support area, with a sustained break above resistance opening a path higher and a breakdown below support signalling a deeper correction.

The moving average configuration frames the trend. Price at $64,279 trades above the 20-day simple moving average at $64,219 and the 50-day at $63,392, and below the 100-day at $67,628 and the 200-day at $69,918. That arrangement describes a short-term recovery inside a medium-term downtrend.

The liquidation map explains the oscillation. The nearest downside cluster sits between $63,600 and $63,800, with a second pocket at $63,200 to $63,400. The largest upside band sits between $65,500 and $65,700. Spot sits roughly 0.9% from the downside pocket and 1.9% from the upside one.

The daily relative strength index at 50.31 against a signal line at 50.10 is the most neutral reading available. Neither side has accumulated momentum.

The five-day inflow streak coincided with bitcoin decisively breaking $65,000. Monday's outflow coincided with the failure to hold it. The relationship runs both ways: flows follow price as reliably as price follows flows.

Strategy Sold 1,690 Bitcoin And Has Not Bought In Seven Weeks

The corporate treasury channel has moved from accumulation to distribution alongside the ETF complex.

Strategy disposed of 1,690 bitcoin for approximately $108.6 million and directed the proceeds into repurchasing $108.6 million of its STRC preferred stock. The company has sold roughly $432 million of bitcoin during 2026 and has gone seven consecutive weeks without a purchase. It also raised $653 million through share sales during the same period.

The transaction structure is balance sheet repair rather than a directional call. Selling bitcoin to retire preferred equity reduces fixed obligations at the cost of shrinking the reserve those obligations funded.

The position remains dominant in absolute terms. Strategy holds 840,447 bitcoin, which exceeds IBIT's 734,261 at June 30 and represents roughly 4% of total supply. At $64,279, that stake carries a market value near $54.0 billion.

The significance for ETF flow analysis is that two of the three largest sources of persistent demand across the past two years have moved from net accumulation to net distribution within the same quarter. Spot ETFs are negative $4.5 billion year to date. The largest corporate holder has not purchased in seven weeks and has sold $432 million.

That leaves on-chain holders as the remaining absorber, and the data shows them performing that function. Whale and shark wallets have continued accumulating within the $63,000 to $65,000 band while balances held by smaller investors have fallen at the fastest pace since December 2024.

Trump Media's termination of its CRO treasury arrangement reinforced the pattern across the treasury-vehicle sector. These structures function as leveraged accumulation instruments during advances and as forced sellers during drawdowns, and the second half of that cycle has arrived.

The arithmetic that matters for spot bitcoin is that the marginal buyer has changed identity. Regulated capital has stepped back and large private holders have stepped in, which alters both the price sensitivity and the reporting visibility of demand.

Wednesday's CPI Determines Whether The Streak Resumes

The macro catalyst arriving in less than 24 hours is what the flow data will respond to next.

July US CPI arrives Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time. Consensus places headline at 0.2% month over month and 3.4% year over year, easing from 3.5% in June, with core at 0.2% and 2.5% annually, down from 2.6%. The Producer Price Index follows Thursday.

Money markets carry 22 basis points of Federal Reserve tightening by the end of 2026, up from 17 basis points on Friday, with September hold odds at 53.9%. The Federal Open Market Committee meets September 15-16 with the target range at 3.50% to 3.75%.

The Federal Reserve's rate policy remains the key variable, with higher rates historically creating headwinds for risk assets. Signals suggesting potential rate cuts later in 2026 provided a tailwind, and hawkish surprises could trigger significant volatility.

The precedent for a hot print is documented in the share price. IBIT's 52-week low of $32.84 was set with bitcoin approaching $58,000 following inflation data that came in hotter than expected. That is the mechanical link between the CPI release and the fund's price: an upside inflation surprise produced a 9.5% decline from current levels the last time it occurred.

A cool print reverses the sequence. Tightening expectations compress, the 10-year retreats from 4.726%, the Dollar Index softens from 99.826, and the inflow streak resumes. Bitcoin reclaims $65,000, triggers short liquidations in the $65,500 to $65,700 cluster, and moves toward the 100-day SMA at $67,628, which coincides with the identified $68,000 resistance zone.

The July payrolls figure sits on the constructive side of the ledger. Nonfarm payrolls fell 23,000 against forecasts near 80,000, with unemployment easing to 4.1% from 4.2% alongside a declining participation rate. That report cooled hike expectations on Friday and delivered the $853.54 million weekly inflow.

Monday's crude move reversed it within one session, which measures how thin the constructive case currently is.

The Coldcard Exploit Reframed The Custody Argument

A security incident outside the fund structure has become part of the ETF case.

BlackRock's head of digital assets addressed the recent Coldcard wallet incident, describing it as a security failure rather than a problem involving bitcoin's underlying network. He attributed the vulnerability to an amateurish error and characterized incidents involving individual wallets as security mismanagement issues.

The exploit drained roughly $116 million from hardware wallets through a random number generator flaw, and a subsequent audit identified 85 additional critical bugs across bitcoin infrastructure.

The relevance to ETF flows is the custody comparison. IBIT holds bitcoin in cold storage where private keys are generated and stored offline, making them more resistant to hacking, with holdings valued daily on the CF Benchmarks Index. That structure is institutionally managed with insurance, audit, and regulatory oversight that a self-custody hardware wallet does not carry.

A $116 million self-custody loss occurring in the same month the in-kind conversion minimum fell 96% is a coincidence with commercial implications. Holders reconsidering their custody arrangement now face a materially lower barrier to moving coins into the fund structure.

The counterargument is concentration. Approximately 80% of ETF-held bitcoin sits with a single custodian, which means the wrapper substitutes one risk profile for another rather than eliminating risk. A failure at that custodian would affect a scale of assets no individual wallet compromise could approach.

The exploit produced no visible effect on bitcoin's price. A $116 million loss in a $1.29 trillion asset moved nothing, during a week when a $144.67 million ETF outflow moved it 2%.

That asymmetry measures where the market's attention sits. Custody incidents are idiosyncratic. Flow data is a macro signal, and macro currently dominates everything.

Ether ETFs At $14.6 Million Out Broke A Four-Session Run

The parallel complex provides the cross-asset read on institutional preference.

US spot ether ETFs recorded $14.6 million in net outflows on August 10, ending a four-session run of positive flows. The prior week delivered approximately $245 million of inflows, the largest weekly figure since April 2026, with $49.6 million arriving on August 7 alone.

The proportional comparison favors ether. A $245 million weekly inflow against ether's roughly $228 billion market capitalization represents 0.11% of the asset. Bitcoin's $853.54 million against a $1.29 trillion market cap is 0.066%. Ether attracted proportionally more capital relative to its size.

The cumulative comparison favors bitcoin overwhelmingly. Ether's complex carries approximately $11.65 billion in cumulative net inflows against bitcoin's $51.3 billion to $58 billion, a ratio of roughly 4.4-to-1 against a market capitalization ratio of 5.7-to-1.

Total ether ETF net assets reached $10.74 billion, equal to 4.65% of the asset's market capitalization. The equivalent bitcoin figure sits above 6%, and the gap widened through 2026.

That differential is the mechanical explanation for the drawdown gap. Ether trades 62.2% below its $4,953 peak while bitcoin sits 49% below $126,000, a 13-percentage-point spread that fundamentals do not explain. Ether's staking participation reached an all-time high at 33.98% of supply while its price fell.

Both complexes reversed on the same session for the same reason, which confirms that the driver is macro rather than asset-specific. Crude at $88.89, a 4.726% ten-year, and a 99.826 Dollar Index produced simultaneous redemptions across two structurally different assets.

The combined $159.2 million outflow across both complexes on a single session is the cleanest available measure of how regulated capital responds to a hawkish rate repricing.

Flows Follow Price More Reliably Than Price Follows Flows

The causal relationship between ETF demand and bitcoin's price is the analytical question underneath all of this data, and the recent sequence answers it.

Bitcoin broke $65,000 and $853.54 million arrived across five sessions. Bitcoin failed to hold $65,000 and $144.67 million left in one session. The price move preceded the flow in both directions.

That sequencing matters for anyone using flow data as a leading indicator. The five-day inflow streak was characterized as a fundamental shift rather than speculative momentum, and it lasted five days. A fundamental shift that reverses on a crude print is positioning.

The consistency of these inflows over a five-day streak indicated a change in how traditional finance views digital assets, but the interruption after one hawkish session suggests the change is in the access mechanism rather than in the conviction.

The structural conclusion is that ETF flows amplify rather than initiate. Bitcoin rallies, allocators buy the strength, the buying extends the rally. Bitcoin falls, allocators reduce, the reduction extends the decline. That amplification is real and it operates with a one-day lag.

What the flows do not do is create direction. Cumulative inflows of $58 billion coexist with bitcoin 49% below its peak, which establishes that $58 billion of regulated demand across two and a half years was insufficient to hold a price level.

The in-kind mechanism will complicate the measurement further. As the $1 million threshold drives adoption, an increasing share of reported flows will represent custody transfers rather than purchases, which will weaken the already loose relationship between headline flow figures and spot market pressure.

For traders, the practical implication is that the flow data is confirmation rather than signal. The $144.67 million outflow tells you Monday was a risk-off session. Bitcoin's failure at $65,000 told you that first.

Bitcoin ETF Flows And IBIT: Levels And Scenarios

The base case holds IBIT between $33 and $40 through the CPI reaction, tracking bitcoin between $60,000 and $68,000, with the $63,900 spot pivot and the $36.19 NAV as the operative references.

The bullish path requires three confirmations. First, a return to positive net flows across the complex, with IBIT resuming its role as the primary source rather than the primary redemption. Second, bitcoin reclaiming $65,000 on a daily close, which triggers short liquidations in the $65,500 to $65,700 cluster. Third, a move through the 100-day SMA at $67,628 and the identified $68,000 resistance zone, which would place IBIT near $38.50 and open the path toward the $40 level. Sustaining that requires monthly inflows above the April pace of $1.97 billion, which has occurred once in 2026.

The bearish path requires two. Continued outflows extending beyond two or three sessions, which would establish a streak rather than a pause, and bitcoin losing the $63,900 pivot and the 50-day SMA at $63,392. That sequence delivers spot into the $63,200 to $63,400 liquidity pocket and opens the $58,000 to $60,000 support area, which would place IBIT near $33 and within 1% of its $32.84 fifty-two-week low. The precedent is exact: that low was printed with bitcoin near $58,000 after a hot inflation print.

Invalidation for the bullish case is a daily close below $33 on IBIT. Invalidation for the bearish case is a close above $38.50.

The medium-term structure is two-way and that is the durable change. Net flows were negative in 54% of 2026 sessions against 31% in 2024. Year-to-date flows sit roughly $4.5 billion in the red, the first negative calendar year on record. IBIT's 734,261 bitcoin carry a $17.61 billion unrealized loss at a cost basis near $83,080, which is 29.2% above spot and creates an overhang between here and the mid-$70,000s. Strategy has not bought in seven weeks and has sold $432 million in 2026.

The medium-term support is structural rather than flow-driven. The in-kind minimum falling 96% from $25 million to $1 million opens a conversion channel that has grown across three quarters and converts self-custodied supply into fund holdings. Whales are accumulating the $63,000 to $65,000 band while smaller balances shrink at the fastest pace since December 2024. Combined net assets of $78.16 billion and $2.03 billion in daily trading value confirm the wrapper is functioning at scale, with a 0.11% premium to NAV and a 0.25% expense ratio that undercuts the category by roughly two-thirds.

The trade into Wednesday is bitcoin's $63,900 pivot and IBIT's $36.19 NAV. Above $65,000 spot, the flow streak resumes and $38.50 comes into play. Below $63,392, the outflows extend and the $32.84 low returns to the frame. The July CPI print determines which.
