Ethereum (ETH-USD) Runs to $1,970 for a Ten-Week High as the ETH/BTC Ratio Breaks Its 200-Day Average for the First Time Since January
Ethereum opened at $1,953.02 and pushed to $1,970 as Brent's 7% collapse cut Fed hike odds to 30.5% | That's TradingNEWS
Key Points
- ETH opened at $1,953.02 and reached $1,970, a ten-week high, up 4% to 5% on the day.
- Ethereum has gained 24% since June 29 against Bitcoin's 10%, and 5% last week against 1%.
- The ETH/BTC ratio hit 0.030, its highest since late April, clearing the 200-day average and a descending channel.
Ethereum (ETH-USD) opened Monday at $1,953.02, up 4.3% against Sunday's open, and pushed higher through the session to trade near $1,960 by mid-afternoon European time with prints as high as $1,970. That is a ten-week high, and the strongest relative session Ethereum has delivered against Bitcoin in three months. Market capitalisation sits near $233 billion against Bitcoin's $1.33 trillion.
The gap in performance is the story. Bitcoin gained roughly 1% over the past week; Ethereum climbed 5%. Since June 29, Bitcoin is up 10% and Ethereum 24%. Over the past 24 hours Bitcoin added about 1.07% to $65,091 while Ethereum ran 4% to 4.5%. When the second-largest asset outruns the first by a factor of four on a broad risk-relief day, capital is moving down the risk curve rather than simply reflating.
Monday's catalyst was macro rather than crypto-native. The United States and Iran paused strikes over the weekend, Brent crude collapsed more than 7% from above $100 to around $87, and the probability of a Federal Reserve hike on Wednesday fell to 30.5% from 37.4% at Friday's close. Every levered risk asset caught a bid, and Ethereum carries more beta to that impulse than Bitcoin does.
The composition of the rally reinforces the read. Decentralised finance tokens led outright: AAVE gained 9%, LDO 9.39% and ONDO 7%, while PUMP surged 12.24% to push its market capitalisation toward $800 million from $570 million two weeks ago. Those are Ethereum-ecosystem assets moving harder than the base layer, which is the classic sequence when risk appetite returns to the application tier.
The longer frame remains brutal. Ethereum's record is $4,946, set in late August 2025. At $1,960 the asset trades roughly 60% below that peak — a deeper drawdown than Bitcoin's 48% and one of the more severe corrections in the asset's history that did not involve a systemic failure. Circulating supply stands at 120.7 million tokens.
Sentiment has improved without turning constructive. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index reads 30, up from 26 last week but still squarely in fear territory and just clear of extreme fear. That is a market that has stopped panicking and has not started believing.
The ETH/BTC Ratio Broke 0.030 and Its 200-Day Average in the Same Session
The single most consequential chart in crypto right now is not Ethereum's dollar price. It is the ratio against Bitcoin, and it moved decisively Monday.
ETH/BTC hit 0.030, its highest level since late April, and broke above its 200-day moving average for the first time since January. It also cleared a multi-month descending channel that had contained every recovery attempt since the spring. That is three separate technical thresholds resolving in the same direction inside one session.
The path here matters. The ratio bottomed near 0.026 in early June — a ten-month low — then spent six weeks forming higher lows while 0.0282 to 0.0286 capped every attempt to advance. That ceiling rejected price repeatedly through mid-July. Clearing it and then extending to 0.030 represents roughly a 15% recovery on a pair that has disappointed for most of the past eighteen months.
Three dynamics drove the multi-year decline and all three are still nominally in place. Competition from alternative layer-1 networks siphoned attention and capital away. Stronger Bitcoin ETF demand pulled institutional flows toward BTC over ETH. Weaker Ethereum fund flows compounded the gap. Each fed the others. The three-month trend still favours Bitcoin despite the July bounce, and Bitcoin dominance remains at 59%.
What has changed is that all three headwinds have paused simultaneously at a level where value buyers became active. The chairman of the largest corporate Ethereum treasury flagged the ratio directly Monday, describing the three-month high as evidence crypto prices are strengthening — notable because he framed it as occurring despite falling odds of US crypto legislation passing this year, not because of them.
The historical precedent bulls lean on is genuine. During the 2022 bear market, Ethereum began outperforming Bitcoin several months before Bitcoin reached its own bottom. Ratio leadership has historically preceded broad market recovery rather than followed it.
The threshold that would confirm a real rotation sits considerably higher. Analysts tracking the pair have pointed to 0.035 on a weekly closing basis as the level that converts this from a bounce into a regime change. At 0.030 the market is roughly 17% short of that. A rejection here puts 0.027 back in play with the 0.026 June floor beneath it.
Ethereum ETFs Out-Collected Bitcoin ETFs Three-to-One Last Week
The flow data delivered the most genuinely surprising number of the week. US spot Ethereum ETFs pulled approximately $103.9 million in net inflows during the week ended July 24. US spot Bitcoin ETFs took $33.79 million over the same five sessions. Ethereum collected roughly three times what Bitcoin did, on an asset base a fraction of the size.
That inverts the dynamic that defined 2026. For most of the year the Bitcoin complex absorbed institutional capital while Ethereum funds bled, which is precisely why the ETH/BTC ratio fell to a ten-month low. Last week the relationship flipped.
The July sequence shows a genuine trend rather than a single print. The week of July 13–17 delivered $105 million, the strongest weekly figure since April and an acceleration from the prior week's $84 million — ending an eight-week outflow streak. Across July 14–21 the complex took approximately $196.4 million. Then $103.9 million in the week ended July 24. Three consecutive positive weeks after two months of persistent redemptions.
Concentration is both the strength and the vulnerability. BlackRock's iShares Ethereum Trust has accounted for the overwhelming majority of net creations throughout. It contributed $58.3 million on July 14, $31.7 million on July 17 and $52.8 million on July 21, and on July 15 captured $45.29 million of the day's $53.83 million complex-wide total. Its brand, distribution and institutional trust give it structural pull smaller issuers cannot replicate, which is why its direction has driven Ethereum price action more than any other product in the category.
The cumulative ledger keeps the enthusiasm honest. US spot Ethereum ETFs have recorded roughly $11.18 billion in net inflows since launching in July 2024, with the BlackRock product alone accounting for approximately $11.4 billion of cumulative creations — meaning every other issuer in the complex is collectively net negative since launch.
The reversal is not clean either. Ethereum ETFs shed $70.7 million on July 24 alone, the same session Bitcoin funds lost $240.1 million, which is how a positive week still contained a sharp late-week reversal. Persistence across several more weeks is what separates institutional re-engagement from a technical bounce.
Staking Is the Structural Difference, and BlackRock Just Productised It
The variable that separates Ethereum's investment case from Bitcoin's is yield, and 2026 has been the year that finally reached regulated wrappers.
Approximately 41 million ETH is now staked — comfortably above 30% of circulating supply, up from roughly 33 million tokens earlier in the year. That supply is locked, earning rewards, and structurally removed from immediate sell-side liquidity. The Pectra upgrade's economic impact is what accelerated the trajectory, and the staked share has continued climbing through a year in which price fell 60% from the high.
The conviction signal embedded in that matters as much as the supply mechanic. Holders who stake are locking ETH to earn yield rather than positioning to sell. Rising staked supply through a brutal drawdown indicates the core holder base stayed committed even as the price collapsed, which reduces the reflexive selling that amplifies crypto declines. Exchange reserves reinforce it — ETH held on exchanges sits at its lowest level since 2016.
BlackRock has now packaged this. The firm launched a staking ETF trading under ETHB, holding approximately 80% staked ether, alongside its existing spot product. That is a materially different instrument from a Bitcoin ETF: it generates an income stream from the underlying protocol rather than pure price exposure. Several other products began introducing staking during 2026.
The risk profile is genuinely more complex, and that complexity has been part of Ethereum's institutional disadvantage. Staking introduces liquidity constraints on redemption, slashing exposure if validators misbehave, operational dependency on infrastructure providers, and regulatory ambiguity that Bitcoin's simpler structure avoids. Ethereum also lacks Bitcoin's fixed-supply narrative and launched its ETFs without staking, which cost it two years of differentiation.
If staking-enabled products gain assets at scale, they change who owns Ethereum and why. A pension allocator that cannot justify a non-yielding commodity can justify a yield-bearing settlement asset. That transition is the bull case that operates independently of price momentum, and it is the reason the flow reversal deserves more weight than the dollar move.
BitMine Now Owns 4.8% of All Ether and Just Slowed Down
The largest corporate Ethereum treasury published its weekly disclosure Monday, and the detail rewards close reading.
BitMine Immersion (BMNR) reported holdings of 5,787,414 ETH valued at $1,948 per token, equal to 4.8% of the 120.7 million circulating supply. Total crypto, cash and equity holdings reached $11.8 billion, comprising the ether position, 208 Bitcoin, a $180 million stake in Beast Industries, a $61 million stake in Eightco Holdings, and $268 million in cash and marketable securities. Of the ether, 4,917,189 tokens are staked through the company's own infrastructure at an annualised yield of 2.70%.
The purchase pace is the number that changed. BitMine bought 9,946 ETH last week. Three weeks ago it acquired 42,197. A month ago it took 27,084. In spring it purchased 126,971 in a single week. The company has bought ether every week since launching the strategy on June 30, 2025, and remains within reach of its stated goal of 5% of supply — but the marginal contribution has fallen by roughly 90% from peak cadence.
Capital is being redirected rather than withdrawn. The company repurchased 6.1 million of its own shares last week, up from 5.5 million the week prior, under a $4 billion authorisation. More than 11 million shares have now been retired, which the chairman describes as the largest common stock buyback executed by any Ethereum or Bitcoin digital asset treasury.
The commentary was explicitly ratio-driven. Management cited the ETH/BTC pair at a three-month high of 0.030 as the justification for increasing the buyback, framing it as evidence crypto prices are strengthening despite deteriorating odds for US crypto legislation this year. Near-term targets were identified at $2,000 and $2,500, with a technical adviser pointing to those levels on a comparison of Ethereum's chart to the S&P 500 after October 1987.
The strategic thesis behind the position is that Ethereum is structurally mispriced and could scale into a $5 trillion network — premium digital land on which tokenised real-world assets, equities and traditional financial systems eventually settle.
The Corporate Bid Is Rotating From Tokens to Its Own Equity
The shift visible in BitMine's disclosure has implications well beyond one company, because Ethereum treasury vehicles became a meaningful source of marginal demand during 2025 and 2026.
When a treasury company buys 126,971 ETH in a week, it is absorbing supply that would otherwise clear against ordinary market bids. When it buys 9,946 and spends the rest retiring its own shares, that supply absorption largely disappears. The rationale is defensible — repurchasing equity trading below the value of the underlying holdings is accretive to net tokens per share, and it addresses a discount problem rather than adding to a token position already at 4.8% of supply. But the mechanical effect on spot Ethereum demand is negative regardless of how sound the capital allocation is.
The second-largest holder followed a similar arc. SharpLink Gaming paused accumulation for eight months before resuming, having absorbed unrealised losses running into the billions during the drawdown. Its shares traded up 5% to $6.07 Monday alongside the broader crypto relief. Several other public companies — including Bit Digital — have adopted Ethereum treasury strategies mirroring the Bitcoin playbook.
Concentration risk runs in both directions. BitMine's portfolio is overwhelmingly a single asset, which is the point of the vehicle and also its principal vulnerability. Unrealised losses approached $9.7 billion at one stage during 2026, and the company kept buying through it. That behaviour supported the market on the way down. Any reversal in that posture would remove a buyer whose weekly activity has been visible in the tape for over a year.
The honest framing of Monday's rally is therefore narrow. It rests substantially on one asset manager's ETF flows and one corporate treasury's accumulation, both of which have been decelerating even as the price rises. A rally that improves while its two principal sponsors reduce their marginal contribution is either evidence that broader buyers have arrived, or evidence that the move is thinner than it appears.
The next several weeks of flow data resolve which. Until then, the ETH/BTC breakout is a technical fact and its sponsorship is an open question.
The Level Map: $1,944 Is Reclaimed, $2,000 Is the Gate
Ethereum has just cleared the first meaningful resistance band in weeks, and the structure above it is well defined.
The 100-day exponential moving average sits near $1,944.79 and had been capping every advance through July. Analysts had also flagged $1,938 as a hard resistance shelf. Both have now been reclaimed with the move through $1,960, which is the first structural improvement since the June low.
Above, the map is specific. The $2,000 handle is the psychological and technical gate — cited by the largest corporate holder as the first of two near-term objectives. Beyond it, $2,055.47 marks the level that would open the longer-term bullish structure on a decisive close, with $2,200 to $2,239 identified as the immediate technical target zone by prominent sell-side commentary. Heavier resistance sits at $2,400, and $2,500 is the second stated near-term objective.
Support is equally clear. Immediate support sits near $1,806, with $1,800 as the psychological floor beneath it. Below that, the critical reference is a multi-year ascending trendline that has held through every cycle low since 2022 — Ethereum was pressing that line as recently as July 20 before this bounce. Losing it would be the first genuine structural breakdown in four years, and it is why the recovery from that test carries more weight than a routine bounce.
The weekly chart shows a rising channel with historical bounce points intact, an intermediate reference near $4,800 and a longer-term upper projection toward $10,000 — figures that describe the channel geometry rather than any near-term forecast.
Momentum readings sit in constructive but unstretched territory. The 14-day relative strength index has been running in the low 60s during the recovery, which leaves room to extend without triggering an overbought constraint.
The working framework into Wednesday: constructive while Ethereum holds above $1,944, confirmed above $2,000 on a daily close, and invalidated below $1,806. A rejection at $2,000 with the ETH/BTC ratio failing at 0.030 would put $1,860 back in play quickly, since that is where the asset consolidated as recently as Sunday.
What Ethereum Actually Earns, and Why That Argument Has Not Moved the Price
The fundamental case for Ethereum has strengthened materially over two years while the price fell 60%, which is the disconnect underpinning every bull thesis.
Stablecoins on Ethereum have crossed $158 billion — payments, remittances and institutional settlement rather than speculative float. The network still houses well above 60% of total decentralised finance liquidity and a very large share of global stablecoin activity. Tokenised treasury products from the largest asset managers settle on the protocol. Exchange reserves sit at their lowest since 2016.
The architecture that delivers this changed fundamentally. Blob transactions introduced in the Dencun upgrade cut Layer 2 costs by 90% to 99%, making rollups the default execution environment and mainnet a settlement layer. The Fusaka upgrade, activated in December 2025, added data-availability sampling so nodes verify blobs without storing them in full, lifting the per-block blob target and cutting Layer 2 fees a further 40% to 60% in its first month. Typical swaps and transfers on rollups now cost under a cent. Fusaka also introduced blob-parameter-only forks, allowing blob limits to rise without full hard forks, and pinned a proportional reserve price under blob fees so the auction cannot collapse to meaningless levels and erode validator revenue.
Ethereum has also moved to a twice-yearly hard fork schedule, with Glamsterdam the next major upgrade expected to follow.
The problem is the value-accrual question, and it is the honest core of the bear case. Activity migrating to Layer 2 networks distributes usage rather than reducing it, but it also moves fee revenue away from the base layer that ETH holders capture. A network settling trillions in stablecoin transfers while mainnet fee income compresses is a fine outcome for users and an ambiguous one for the token.
That is why the flow data matters more than the fundamentals right now. The next rally becomes credible if ETF inflows persist for several weeks, staking products gain assets, and Ethereum sustains outperformance against Bitcoin. Strong fundamentals alone did not protect the asset through a 60% drawdown, and they will not drive the recovery on their own.

The Bear Case Is Still Intact and Deserves Stating Plainly
Nothing structural reversed on Monday. Four objections survive the rally.
The drawdown remains deeper than Bitcoin's. Ethereum trades roughly 60% below its August 2025 record against Bitcoin's 48%, and the three-month ETH/BTC trend still favours Bitcoin despite the July bounce. A single session clearing the 200-day average does not undo eighteen months of relative decline.
Layer-1 competition has not gone away. Alternative networks with monolithic architectures and strong consumer applications continue attracting developers and capital. Ethereum's modular Layer 1 plus Layer 2 design offers the deepest liquidity and broadest tooling while fragmenting user experience across chains — a genuine trade-off that competitors exploit.
The flow reversal is narrow and reversible. Three positive ETF weeks follow eight negative ones, and the complex still shed $70.7 million on July 24. Cumulative inflows since launch of $11.18 billion are dwarfed by the Bitcoin complex's $51.63 billion. One issuer accounts for essentially all of it.
The regulatory catalyst is fading, not building. The CLARITY Act is stalled after Senate Democrats refused to advance it without shifting ethics-provision enforcement from the Department of Justice to state attorneys general. If it does not clear before the August recess, midterm politics make 2026 passage unlikely. That legislation was cited as recently as three weeks ago by the largest corporate holder as the reason for accelerating purchases; that same holder now describes the ratio strength as occurring despite the bill's declining odds.
A fifth item deserves mention. The rally's sponsorship is concentrated in a single ETF issuer and a single treasury company, both of which are reducing marginal contribution. When the two largest identifiable buyers slow while price rises, either broader demand has quietly arrived or the tape is thinner than the move suggests.
Forecast dispersion reflects all of this. Model ranges for 2026 span from a $1,709.93 minimum with a $1,931.53 maximum on one framework to a $1,765 to $2,789 July range on another, with year-end averages clustering between $2,423 and $2,792. When credible models disagree by 60%, the honest answer is that the outcome depends on flows nobody can forecast.
Wednesday's Fed Decides Whether the Breakout Survives Its First Test
The FOMC meets July 28–29 with the statement at 2 p.m. Eastern Wednesday and a press conference at 2:30. Consensus is a hold at 3.50% to 3.75%, extending a level maintained by unanimous vote in June. Hike probability sits at 30.5% after Monday's oil collapse, down from 37.4% at Friday's close. September odds run near 82%.
Three features make this dangerous for a freshly broken-out ratio. There is no Summary of Economic Projections and no dot plot; both return September 15–16. The chair has abandoned forward guidance entirely since taking office in June. And the committee is split evenly between officials favouring a hold or cut and those advocating a hike before year-end.
Ethereum is not trading Wednesday's number. It is trading whether real yields fall enough to sustain risk appetite at the far end of the curve. A statement reading as a genuine pause extends the flow recovery and lets ETH/BTC work toward the 0.035 confirmation level. A hawkish lean, or one pointed sentence about September, reverses both — and the DeFi complex that led Monday's rally would give back more than Ethereum does.
The week is dense beyond the decision. Second-quarter GDP and June PCE inflation land Thursday at 8:30 a.m. Eastern, capable of overturning Wednesday's move inside twenty-four hours. Coinbase reports Thursday, providing a read on exchange volumes and institutional activity. The Bank of Japan meets and the Bank of England decides. Two protocol upgrades activate mid-week across the broader crypto complex, including a Zcash upgrade. The CLARITY Act recess clock runs out.
Microsoft and Meta report Wednesday after the close, Apple and Amazon Thursday. Given that Ethereum has traded as levered technology beta throughout 2026 rather than as an independent asset class, those four prints carry more influence over ETH than most crypto-native catalysts on the calendar.
Positioning offers a partial cushion. Discretionary investor exposure across risk assets has fallen to the seventeenth percentile, back to early-April lows. There is limited crowded length to unwind. There is also nobody obvious to chase a breakout.
Altcoin Rotation Is Starting to Show in the Flow Data, Not Just the Price
The most interesting confirmation of Monday's move came from outside Ethereum itself. Among altcoin ETFs last week, XRP products drew $8.15 million and Solana products $7.2 million in net inflows. HYPE funds were the only major altcoin ETFs to post outflows. Capital is spreading beyond the two largest assets into regulated wrappers for the rest of the complex.
Spot pricing tracked it. Solana traded $76.59, up 2.25%. XRP sat at $1.10, up 0.40%. The broad CoinDesk 20 index gained 1.63% to 1,780.09. Within DeFi the moves were considerably larger — AAVE up 9%, LDO 9.39%, ONDO 7% — and PUMP's 12.24% surge lifted its market capitalisation toward $800 million from $570 million a fortnight ago.
The mechanism that would validate a genuine rotation runs through Ethereum specifically. When capital moves down the risk curve, Ethereum is typically the first recipient, because of ecosystem depth, staking yield and institutional relevance that no other altcoin can match. Only after ETH absorbs the initial flow does it propagate to the broader market. Monday's sequence — ETH leading, DeFi tokens leading harder, ETF flows spreading to XRP and Solana — matches that template exactly.
The threshold for confirmation remains higher than where the market sits. The ETH/BTC ratio needs to reclaim 0.035 on a weekly closing basis to establish a genuine altcoin rotation rather than a relief bounce, and Bitcoin dominance at 59% shows the leader has not meaningfully conceded share. Commentary from the more disciplined analysts has framed the outperformance as a signal to observe rather than chase.
Product expansion continues regardless of price. Grayscale has filed for a spot BNB ETF, extending the regulated-wrapper build-out into a fourth and fifth asset. Each new product converts a speculative token into an allocatable instrument, which changes the buyer base over years rather than weeks.
One cautionary note from the sector: a cloud data firm filed for Chapter 11 protection last week, sending its token down 16% and extending a run of crypto business failures. Rotation into risk is not the same as improvement in credit quality.
Forecast: $1,944 Holds the Base Case, $2,000 Decides the Trend
The base case into month-end is continued consolidation between $1,860 and $2,055, with an upward bias while the ceasefire holds and hike odds sit at 30.5%. Assign roughly 45% weight, targeting a weekly close between $1,930 and $2,020. The reclaimed 100-day EMA at $1,944.79 becomes the pivot, and the market spends the week deciding whether $2,000 is a ceiling or a floor.
The bullish path requires three things in sequence. A Wednesday statement reading as a genuine pause, ETF inflows extending to a fourth consecutive week without a late-week reversal, and ETH/BTC holding above 0.030 rather than rejecting at the 200-day average it just cleared. That combination breaks $2,000, opens $2,055.47, and puts the $2,200 to $2,239 technical zone in reach with $2,400 above it. Assign 30%, targeting $2,200 — roughly 12% above spot. The unhedged state of the broader crypto options book means this move would be fast if it triggers.
The bearish path is a hawkish hold or a hot core PCE print Thursday. Ethereum loses the reclaimed $1,944 EMA, breaks $1,900, and tests $1,806 with the multi-year ascending trendline from 2022 beneath it. Assign 25%, targeting $1,806 — 7.9% lower. A break of that trendline would be the first genuine structural failure in four years and would open $1,700 quickly. The DeFi complex that led Monday's advance would fall considerably harder.
The trigger checklist is short and specific. ETH/BTC holding 0.030, and whether it can approach the 0.035 weekly confirmation level. The BlackRock ETF's daily prints for three sessions after the decision, since that single product determines the complex's sign. Whether $2,000 converts from resistance to support on a daily close. BitMine's next weekly disclosure and whether the 9,946 ETH purchase pace stabilises or falls further. And staked supply above 41 million tokens, which is the slow structural variable that operates regardless of price.
