XRP Defends $1.35 As The Escrow Math Caps Every Rally — $1.55 Is The Line That Changes It
August delivered a record $150 million of ETF inflows and bought roughly 110 million tokens | That's TradingNEWS
Key Points
- XRP-USD trades at $1.37, up 27% in August, with a market cap near $86 billion.
- Ripple unlocked 1 billion XRP on September 1, leaving 31.28 billion still in escrow.
- Spot XRP ETFs took a record $150 million in August against roughly 109 million tokens absorbed.
XRP trades at $1.37 with 24-hour volume of $2.468 billion, recovering above $1.36 and pushing toward $1.40 after a monthly rally that delivered 27% to 28.5% — the token's best August since 2021 and a break from a month it has lost six times in nine years. Almost all of that gain arrived in the final two weeks.
Against 62.745 billion circulating tokens, market capitalization sits near $86 billion. The 52-week range runs from $0.99 to $3.18, leaving XRP 38.4% above the low and 56.9% below the high, with a 52-week change of negative 51.81%. The cycle low printed at $0.9877.
Today's move is the modest version of a broad crypto recovery. Bitcoin gained 4.28% to $80,311.25 as Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller cracked the September hike trade, taking CME FedWatch odds to roughly 48% from nearly 70%. XRP participated alongside BNB and Solana while Ethereum sat the rally out. Sentiment reads at 69 on the Fear and Greed index, in Greed territory.
The problem is that none of it changes the arithmetic that has defined this token all year, and September 1 provided the reminder. Ripple released 1 billion XRP from escrow through three separate transactions of 500 million, 400 million and 100 million tokens — the regular monthly unlock that has run since December 2017. Approximately 31.28 billion XRP remained in escrow afterward. The next release lands October 1.
Against that, the entire spot ETF complex absorbs roughly 109 million tokens a month.
August was the category's best month of 2026 at over $150 million of net inflows, beating the previous high of $131.94 million in May. At $1.37 that buys approximately 110 million tokens. Ripple released nine times that on a single day.
The thesis for this forecast is that XRP's price is set by a supply schedule rather than by demand, and every rally runs into the same wall until either the escrow releases stop or absorption multiplies. Only one of those is achievable, and the non-price fundamentals — XRP Ledger active addresses up 35% in August, RLUSD past $1.7 billion — are the first evidence it might.
The levels are tight: $1.55 is the descending triangle ceiling, $1.35 the floor.
The Escrow Arithmetic Is The Whole Story
Everything in this market reduces to one ratio, and it has not moved in Ripple's favour.
Monthly ETF absorption runs approximately 109 million tokens. Monthly net escrow release runs 200 million to 400 million after Ripple re-locks the unused portion — the company has historically returned between 600 million and 800 million of each billion-token unlock back into new escrows, though September's specific re-escrow amount was not independently confirmed at the time of reporting. Supply exceeds absorption by roughly 2.3 to 1 every single month.
That is the mechanism behind a token that has fallen 51.81% over twelve months while its ETF complex accumulated steadily and its legal overhang disappeared entirely.
The scale of the remaining schedule matters. Approximately 31.28 billion XRP sits in escrow against 62.745 billion circulating. Even at a net release of 300 million a month, the float grows roughly 0.5% annually while the ETF category adds tokens at a fraction of that rate. The token count grows. The float grows faster.
At current levels the ETF complex holds close to 1 billion XRP, approximately 1.59% of circulating supply. Bitcoin's spot funds hold roughly 6.1% to 6.5% of that asset's market capitalization, and their daily creations still fail to move the underlying price. XRP's funds hold a quarter of that share.
The right framing for ETF flows is a floor rather than a launchpad. Every token locked inside XRPI, XRPR and the other five funds is spot supply removed from the market as long as units stay outstanding, and that reduces downside elasticity. It explains why the $1.00 level held every test this year. It does not explain how the price rises.
The uncertainty for September is how much of the 1 billion release actually reaches the market. Reports suggest a larger portion could stay in circulation if liquidity requirements increase following regulatory progress. That creates a clean buy-the-rumour setup: limited impact if most tokens are re-locked or absorbed, meaningful downside pressure if a larger share enters circulation during a period of weak technical momentum.
Ripple has never disclosed its selling schedule. That opacity is itself a structural discount on the token.
August Delivered A Record $150 Million And It Was Not Enough
The demand side had its best month of the year, and the price barely responded relative to the effort.
Spot XRP ETFs gathered over $150 million in net inflows during August, the category's strongest performance of 2026. That beat the previous high of $131.94 million in May, $81.59 million in April and $58.09 million in February. The distribution within the month was extreme: roughly $1 million across the first two weeks, including a $3.5 million outflow on August 5, followed by $31.78 million in the week ending August 21 and $110.49 million in the week ending August 28.
That final week was the largest weekly total since the week ending December 5, when the funds pulled in around $231 million. Weekly inflows crossed $100 million for the first time since December. Across an eleven-day stretch the complex added $170 million.
Bitwise's fund led issuers in August with approximately $92 million — 61% of the entire category total. That concentration is a structural weakness. When one issuer drives three-fifths of the flow, the category's daily prints reflect one allocator's rebalancing rather than broad institutional adoption.
The composition compounds the problem. Retail drives 84% of inflows. Institutional capital has largely sat out, which is why the category holds 1.59% of float rather than the 6% Bitcoin's funds command.
Then September opened with net outflows on the second, alongside outflows from spot ether and solana products, while Bitcoin funds took in $101.15 million. The rotation went to Bitcoin specifically.
Run the numbers on what a strong September would deliver. If the funds match half of August's final-week pace across the whole month, they add roughly $220 million — approximately 160 million tokens at $1.37. Ripple's net release after re-locking runs 200 million to 400 million. Even a September that materially exceeds August's record does not close the gap.
The flows have been genuinely impressive relative to the price. ETF-locked tokens nearly doubled from 478 million in January to over 900 million by June, with institutions buying at depressed prices — the signature of allocation-building rather than tactical trading.
The price has done nothing, and the reason is arithmetic rather than sentiment.
$1.51 Billion Of Inflows Sitting On $994 Million Of Assets
The most damning number in the category is the gap between what went in and what is there.
Seven US spot XRP ETFs have attracted cumulative net inflows of approximately $1.44 billion to $1.51 billion. Total assets under management across the complex stand near $994 million. The difference — roughly $516 million — is capital destroyed by price depreciation between the moment allocators bought and today.
That is a category where investors are down more than a third on aggregate contributions, and it explains why institutional participation has stalled at 16% of flows.
The structural history matters for context. The SEC approved generic listing standards in September 2025, allowing qualifying commodity-based crypto exchange-traded products to list without separate approval for each fund, and the resolution of the Ripple case cleared the legal path. The first wave of spot XRP ETFs followed in November 2025. REX-Osprey's XRPR went live earlier, on September 18, 2025, carrying a 0.75% expense ratio and roughly $96 million in assets at the time, and has never scaled.
The individual fund performance splits sharply. Bitwise has taken 61% of August's flow. Grayscale's GXRP has been a net seller of the underlying: regulatory filings show the Grayscale XRP Trust sold over 103 million XRP, worth roughly $180.78 million, during the first half of 2026.
An issuer liquidating a fifth of a billion dollars of the asset its fund exists to hold is a distinct category of headwind, and it is not captured in the headline net flow figures.
One forward development worth watching sits in a separate registration statement for the Cryptex Digital Market Cap ETF, which assigns XRP an approximate 4.88% portfolio weight. Index-based inclusion generates mechanical, price-insensitive buying that does not depend on any allocator forming a view on XRP specifically. That is a structurally different demand source from the discretionary flows the category has relied on.
At current scale it changes nothing. At index scale it would change the absorption ratio, which is the only thing that matters.
The Late-August Squeeze: 56% In A Week On Short Liquidations
Understanding how XRP got from $0.99 to $1.37 explains how much of the move is durable.
After spending most of the summer grinding in the $0.90 to $1.10 range and printing a cycle low at $0.9877, XRP surged more than 56% in a single week — the sharpest weekly move since the post-settlement rally of August 2025. The drivers were short liquidations, renewed ETF inflows and broader crypto momentum led by Bitcoin's breakout above $77,000.
That is the same mechanism that drove Bitcoin from roughly $62,000 to $80,000 in late August, where BTC-denominated futures open interest collapsed from about 646,000 coins to 588,000 and approximately $3 billion of short liquidations processed as mechanical buying. XRP's move was the higher-beta version of the same event.
The distinguishing factor cited for this rally versus prior leverage-driven spikes is Ripple's institutional progress — the Hidden Road integration going live and RLUSD gaining traction as a settlement layer. That gives the move a fundamental backdrop the previous squeezes lacked.
The problem with squeeze-driven rallies is that they exhaust. Once the liquidatable shorts are gone, the next leg has to be paid for with spot demand, and spot demand in this token is the 109 million tokens a month the ETFs absorb.
The price action since confirms the exhaustion. XRP peaked in late August and has spent the first three sessions of September in a $1.33 to $1.40 band, holding the $1.35 to $1.38 support zone without extending. Volume has been the tell — one assessment flagged weak volume as raising doubts about the breakout even as price approached $1.40.
Over the trailing 30 days XRP has posted 14 green days out of 30, a 47% hit rate, with 16.47% price volatility.
What separates the current level from a genuine trend change is a daily close above $1.55, the descending triangle resistance. Until that prints, the August squeeze is a range expansion inside a downtrend rather than a reversal of it.
Positioning also carries a warning. Institutional long exposure in futures has been rising while taker and smart-money indicators remain bearish — a divergence that typically resolves against the crowded side.
XRP Ledger Active Addresses Grew 35% — The First Non-Price Argument
There is one datapoint from August that changes the conversation, and it has nothing to do with flows or escrow.
XRP Ledger active addresses grew 35% in August. That gives fund managers a fundamental, non-price argument to pitch institutional allocations for the first time — network usage expanding independent of token price.
For a token whose entire investment case has rested on Ripple's corporate progress rather than on the ledger's utilization, that distinction matters enormously. Institutional allocators do not underwrite a token because its parent company raised capital at a $50 billion valuation. They underwrite it because the network it secures is being used, and usage generates a claim.
The mechanism on XRPL is the burn. Every transaction destroys a small amount of XRP as its base fee, a design intended to make denial-of-service attacks economically impossible. The cost rises when the network is under load. Rising active addresses translate directly into rising burn, which reduces supply — the only force on the token's supply side that runs counter to the escrow schedule.
The scale is currently trivial relative to the 1 billion monthly unlock. Thirty-five percent growth on a small base does not offset a release schedule measured in hundreds of millions of tokens.
What matters is direction and durability. If address growth compounds at anything close to 35% monthly through the fourth quarter, the burn rate becomes a visible line item, and the arithmetic that has capped this token starts inverting. That is a multi-quarter thesis, not a September trade.
The distinction traders need to hold is between Ripple news and XRP demand. Ripple securing a national trust bank charter, raising at a $50 billion valuation, or spending roughly $4 billion on acquisitions are all developments for a private company. None of them creates a buyer for the token unless the resulting products settle in XRP.
Active address growth is the first metric in this cycle that speaks to the token rather than to the company. It deserves more attention than any of the corporate headlines.
RLUSD At $1.7 Billion And The Settlement Layer Question
Ripple's stablecoin is the bridge between corporate progress and token demand, and the numbers are becoming material.
RLUSD, Ripple's US dollar-denominated stablecoin, has crossed $1.7 billion in market value. It is issued on both the XRP Ledger and Ethereum, with over 50% of supply residing on XRPL. Ripple is developing institutional lending features using RLUSD as the settlement currency.
That structure is what converts corporate adoption into ledger activity. Every RLUSD transaction settled on XRPL burns XRP as a base fee and requires XRP reserves for account funding. A stablecoin at $1.7 billion with the majority on XRPL is a durable source of transaction volume that does not depend on speculative trading.
The scale comparison frames the opportunity. Stablecoins on Ethereum crossed $158 billion. RLUSD at $1.7 billion is roughly 1% of that. If Ripple's institutional lending product launches and RLUSD scales toward $10 billion or $20 billion, XRPL transaction volume — and the associated burn — moves by an order of magnitude.
The corporate backdrop supports the ambition. Ripple secured conditional approval for a national trust bank, raised capital at a $50 billion valuation, spent roughly $4 billion on acquisitions, and brought the Hidden Road integration live. One major bank has reported exposure.
The catalyst calendar has a specific date. Swell, Ripple's flagship annual conference, runs October 27 to 29 at The Shed in New York, merging for the first time with the XRPL Apex developer summit. The 2026 edition follows a year of structural progress rather than speculative hype. If Ripple announces a production launch date for RLUSD lending, a new banking partnership, or a timeline for XRPL smart contract upgrades, the market gets concrete milestones to price.
The speaker lineup signals the target audience. The chief executive of the exchange that lists several XRP ETFs is scheduled to appear — previous conferences featured crypto-native speakers, and this one is aimed at the allocator class.
That is the correct strategy for a token whose problem is institutional absence. Whether it works shows up in the November flow data, not in the October headlines.
Ripple Is Now Brokering Apple And The S&P 500, And XRP's Role Is Unclear
The most revealing recent development is also the most uncomfortable for token holders.
Ripple has opened a desk that lets hedge funds trade Apple and the S&P 500 without owning a single share. That is a prime brokerage and synthetic exposure business — a genuine institutional revenue line for the company, built on the infrastructure acquired through the Hidden Road integration.
XRP holders are now asking whether their token plays any role in it at all.
The question is fair and it goes to the heart of the valuation problem. Ripple the company has built a legitimate institutional financial services business: a trust bank charter, a prime brokerage, a stablecoin at $1.7 billion, a payments network, and a $50 billion private valuation. XRP the token is a separate asset whose value depends entirely on whether that business routes settlement through the XRP Ledger in volumes large enough to matter.
Historically the answer has been partial at best. Ripple Payments uses XRP as a bridge asset in some corridors and fiat rails in others. RLUSD settles on XRPL for over half its supply, which is genuine. An equities brokerage desk has no obvious reason to touch XRP.
That is why the token has fallen 51.81% over twelve months while every corporate metric improved. The company won and the token did not.
The bull rebuttal is that infrastructure precedes utilization. Building the brokerage, the bank and the stablecoin creates the institutional relationships that eventually route volume onto the ledger, and the 35% growth in active addresses is early evidence of exactly that.
The bear rebuttal is simpler: Ripple has every incentive to build a business that does not depend on XRP, because a business that depends on XRP inherits XRP's volatility and its regulatory history. A $50 billion private valuation built on fiat-settled prime brokerage is worth more than one built on a token trading 57% below its 52-week high.
Token holders should watch which settlement rail each new product uses. That disclosure, not the announcement, is the investable information.
The September 15 CLARITY Act Vote Is The Real Catalyst
The single event most likely to change XRP's institutional flow profile arrives in twelve days.
A Senate procedural cloture vote on the CLARITY Act is targeted for September 15, 2026. Passage would unlock institutional capital that currently sits out the category while retail drives 84% of inflows.
The regulatory momentum has been building. The SEC chair endorsed the Senate vote, stating that congressional statutes provide permanent legal certainty for digital asset firms while agency rules remain vulnerable to administrative change. That distinction is the crux for allocators sizing multi-year positions: a statute survives an election, a rulemaking does not.
Separately, SEC Release 2026-81 authorized public companies to maintain official share registers on distributed ledger technology, enabling same-day settlement. That is traditional finance adopting the rails, and it broadens the institutional infrastructure case beyond ETF wrappers.
For XRP specifically the stakes are higher than for Bitcoin. Bitcoin's institutional case survived regulatory ambiguity because its legal status as a commodity was never seriously contested. XRP spent years as the defendant in a securities enforcement action, and even after that case resolved, allocators have treated the category as carrying residual legal risk. Statutory clarity removes it.
The timing is dense. The CLARITY vote lands September 15, the FOMC decides September 16, and Ripple's Swell conference follows on October 27. Three separate catalysts inside seven weeks, two of them binary.
The mechanism through which a favourable vote reaches the price is institutional ETF allocation. If institutions move from 16% of inflows toward 50%, monthly absorption goes from 109 million tokens toward 300 million or more — which is where the escrow arithmetic finally inverts.
That is the only realistic path to a sustained break above $2.00, and it is worth stating plainly: XRP does not rise on Ripple announcements or on Bitcoin beta. It rises when monthly ETF absorption exceeds net escrow release, and only a change in the institutional buyer base achieves that.
September 15 is when the market finds out whether that change is coming.
Technical Structure: $1.55 Triangle Resistance Above, $1.35 Demand Below
The chart is a descending triangle with well-defined boundaries, and price sits near the lower edge.
XRP at $1.37 holds the $1.35 to $1.38 support zone, with $1.358 flagged as the immediate level and $1.35 identified as one of the most significant demand areas on the chart. The token is underpinned by a strong moving average support cluster, which is why the recovery above $1.36 has held through the session.
The descending triangle's resistance sits near $1.55, 13.1% above the current print. A daily close above it is the requirement to confirm the pattern breaks higher rather than lower. Beyond that, $1.60 and $1.68 are the next references at 16.8% and 22.6% upside, with $1.86 as the extension target — 35.8% higher.
The structural ceiling is $1.80 to $2.00, the zone where significant selling pressure emerged during the January 2026 bounce. Anyone who bought that rally toward $2.41 is still down substantially, and that overhead supply is the break-even sell wall that has capped every recovery attempt this year.
A sustained break above $2.00 would put the longer-term base case of $1.80 to $3.20 firmly in play. That is the most important level on the chart and the one no rally has approached since January.
Shorter-term momentum is mixed. On the four-hour chart the structure reads bearish, with a falling 50-day moving average suggesting a weakening short-term trend. Weak volume on the approach toward $1.40 raises doubts about the breakout attempt. Sentiment at 69 on the Fear and Greed index sits in Greed territory, which is where positioning becomes complacent rather than fearful.
Two things need to happen together for the upside case. Price needs a daily close above $1.55, and ETF inflows need to sustain above $100 million weekly — a threshold crossed for the first time since December during the week ending August 28.
Absent both, the $1.35 to $1.55 range holds and every push toward $1.40 is distribution into the August squeeze rather than accumulation ahead of a breakout.
The volume profile is the tiebreaker. A break on expanding volume is real. One on the current tape is not.

Downside Map: $1.358, The 50-Day EMA At $1.2112, And The $0.9877 Cycle Low
The support structure below is thin, and losing the first level opens a substantial gap.
Immediate support is $1.358, 0.9% below the current price, with the $1.35 demand zone right beneath it at 1.5% lower. Those two function as a single shelf, and it is the level that has absorbed every test since the August rally topped.
Losing $1.35 on a close confirms the descending triangle breaks lower rather than higher. The next structural reference is the 50-day exponential moving average near $1.2112, 11.6% below current levels — an enormous gap with no intervening support.
Beneath that, the summer range floor at $1.05 sits 23.4% lower and the cycle low at $0.9877 is 27.9% below. The $1.00 level held every test this year despite ETF inflows collapsing 79% from their peak pace, which argues it functions as a genuine floor rather than a waypoint.
The scenarios that produce those outcomes are specific and two of them are already in motion.
The first is escrow supply. Uncertainty around how much of the 1 billion September release actually reaches the market, combined with September's historically mixed seasonality, could send price back toward the 50-day EMA. XRP has lost the month of September six times in nine years.
The second is macro. August CPI lands around September 10 and the FOMC decides September 16. If inflation runs hot, September hike odds snap back from 48% toward 68%, the dollar index recovers 99, and the entire high-beta crypto complex sells. XRP with a 51.81% twelve-month decline and Greed-level sentiment is poorly positioned for that.
The third is a failed CLARITY vote on September 15. Institutional capital that has been waiting for statutory clarity would extend its wait, and the retail-driven flow profile that produced $150 million in a record month would remain the only demand source against a 2.3-to-1 supply ratio.
The pattern from earlier this year is the template. XRP rallied to $2.41 in January, fell to $1.11 by early February, consolidated $1.27 to $1.67 through mid-May, then resumed lower to $1.05. Rallies in this token have not held.
Forecast Distribution Runs From $1.05 To $5.13
The published forecast range for XRP is the widest of any major digital asset, and the dispersion reflects genuine disagreement about the supply arithmetic.
The near-term consensus for 2026 places XRP between $1.05 and $1.72 — a range that brackets the current price and implies essentially no directional conviction. For 2027, the same consensus widens to $1.01 to $2.63.
Longer-dated institutional work runs far higher. Most 2026 forecasts cluster between $2.50 and $5.00 with a midpoint near $3.50 to $4.00. One revised institutional projection places XRP around $2.80 under moderate conditions. Bull scenarios extend toward $5.00 to $5.13. Algorithm-driven models remain more conservative at $1.70 to $2.00. A base case of $1.80 to $3.20 by 2030 becomes live on a sustained break above $2.00.
Measured from $1.37: $1.72 is 25.5% higher, $2.00 is 46.0%, $2.80 is 104%, $3.50 is 155% and $5.00 is 265%. The 52-week high at $3.18 requires 132%.
The gap between the near-term consensus and the institutional targets is the escrow question. Forecasts that model XRP as an asset with organic institutional demand produce $3 to $5. Forecasts that model the float mechanically — 62.745 billion circulating, 31.28 billion in escrow, 200 to 400 million net monthly release against 109 million of absorption — produce $1.05 to $2.00.
The second group has been right all year. XRP won everything it was supposed to win in 2026: the SEC case ended, seven spot ETFs launched holding close to a billion tokens, Ripple secured a trust bank charter and raised at $50 billion. The token fell anyway.
The historical price path makes the point. XRP surged more than 23% to $3.38 after the SEC dropped its appeals in August 2025, retreated to $1.87 by year-end, rallied briefly to $2.41 in January 2026, fell to $1.11 by early February, consolidated $1.27 to $1.67 through mid-May, and reached $1.05 at the end of May.
Every catalyst was priced and then given back. The forecasts that assume the next one behaves differently need a reason, and the only credible one is a change in the buyer base.
Verdict And Forecast: $1.86 Above $1.55, $1.20 Below $1.35
XRP at $1.37, holding the $1.35 support zone after a 27% August, deserves a neutral stance with the levels doing the work rather than the narrative.
The bull case has more substance than at any point this year. August delivered over $150 million of ETF inflows, the category's best month of 2026, with $110.49 million arriving in the final week alone — the largest weekly total since December and the first crossing of $100 million weekly since then. XRP Ledger active addresses grew 35% in August, the first non-price fundamental argument fund managers can use with institutions. RLUSD has crossed $1.7 billion with over half its supply on XRPL, and Ripple is building institutional lending on top of it. The company holds conditional approval for a national trust bank, raised at a $50 billion valuation, and hosts Swell on October 27 to 29 with the allocator class as the target audience. A Senate CLARITY Act cloture vote lands September 15, and passage would unlock institutional capital that currently accounts for 16% of a flow base 84% driven by retail.
The bear case is arithmetic and it has been undefeated. Ripple released 1 billion XRP on September 1 with 31.28 billion still in escrow and the next unlock on October 1. Net monthly release after re-locking runs 200 million to 400 million tokens against ETF absorption of approximately 109 million — supply exceeds demand by roughly 2.3 to 1 every month. The complex holds 1.59% of float against 6.1% for Bitcoin's funds, cumulative inflows of $1.51 billion sit on $994 million of assets, and Grayscale sold over 103 million tokens worth $180.78 million in the first half. September opened with net outflows on the second while Bitcoin funds took $101.15 million. The late-August 56% weekly surge was short liquidations, and the four-hour structure remains bearish with a falling 50-day moving average.
The forecast: range-bound between $1.35 and $1.55. A daily close above $1.55 breaks the descending triangle and opens $1.60, $1.68 and $1.86 — 35.8% upside — and requires sustained weekly ETF inflows above $100 million plus a favourable CLARITY vote. A close below $1.35 confirms the triangle breaks lower and targets the 50-day EMA at $1.2112, 11.6% down, with $1.05 and the $0.9877 cycle low beneath. Watch three dates: September 10 CPI, September 15 CLARITY, October 1 escrow. Verdict: neutral, no position without a $1.55 close, and no short into a $1.00 floor that has held every test this year.
